Tiger Woods was taught how to use visualization and his imagination by  his father, Earl, when he was a boy.  Today, Tiger visualizes exactly where he wants the golf ball to go. He sees it in his mind before he hits the ball.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, used visualization for athletic success and also credits it for his success as a movie star: “When I was very young I visualized myself being and having what it was I wanted. Mentally I never had any doubts about it. The mind is really so incredible. Before I won my first Mr. Universe title, I walked around the tournament like I owned it.”

Michael Jordan used visualization to become the greatest basketball player in history.

Oprah: Has always used visualization and has often talked about Vision Boards on her show.

Australian Volley Ball Olympian’s, Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cooke were coached by Actor and Stuntman, Kurek Ashley for 18 months prior to them winning an Olympic Gold Medal.  Kurek would help the girls to visualize and act as if they already had won the medal.

I invited Donny Singe on to Sharina’s radio show tonight on Radio 2UE. Donny is the Head Conditioning and Performance coach with the Manly Sea Eagles. We asked Donny for his 5 tips on starting a fitness program. Here they are:

Tips to start your exercise regime and KEEP at it!

  1. Set your goals! Start with short term to build into long range results. Base your exercise on Honest and Real expectations, note I never said “achievable”, trust me….you have no idea how much you will achieve….yet!
  2. Remember real goals, if you’re a bit on the skinny side, you will have to enter a world of dedication and discipline if you want to look like Arnie. Same same if you’re a bit bigger boned like Pavorotti and want to look like Brad Pitt in Fight Club!
  3. Before torturing yourself with diets or radically changing the content of your diet, start by adjusting your meal portion sizes. Cravings lead to binging or oversnacking or letting your taste buds rule! A result of an imbalance in your blood glucose levels and instability. Don’t set yourself up, plan your meals and snacks by type and time, this will keep the cravings away.
  4. Don’t beat, bash, batter, whip and flog yourself physically or mentally! You have to PLAN your sessions. Start with short sessions of activity, then when comfortable increase the length of sessions or intensity of sessions.
  5. Do not DEPLETE your energy systems or overuse your muscles. This leads to a sore body and tired mind that doesn’t want to move the next day or the day after! You will struggle with consistency and that is what brings you your exercise endurance and results. The fitness industry in Australia is very thorough and heavily regulated. Ask someone in the industry for a starter pack on health and fitness.

Train for YOU! There is no stronger motivation than training for a reason which leads to your happiness. Be it your health, your children, your family, your job! You are listening to me and if something jumps inside you and screams “let’s go “.  Pause and identify what that is, because that “thing” is definitely deeper within you than my motivating words of wisdom. You identify that “thing” and you will reap much much more than a great healthy body.
